Pileated woodpecker--the largest woodpecker in most of North America. Its loud rining calls and huge, rectangular excavations in dead trees announce its presence in forests across the continent.

All of the pictures were taken from 350-400 feet away.

Size: 16-19 inches.
Wingspan: 26-30 inches.
Weight: 8.8-12.4 ounces.

It has a red crest on its head, the male has a red crown and forehead with a red in black "mustache" stripe; the females have gray to yellow-brown forehead and no red in the "mustache" stripe.
