Using your chosen item as a makeshift paddle, you paddle a safe distance away from the ship. You carefully inspect your raft: It seems to be holding up. You look up at the sky and realize that it is going to be a long night! The
horrible thunderstorm had passed, or the ship had finally managed to sail out of it, but the sky was still overcast. The sea was calm and you begin to wonder if the storm had passed or if the ship did sail out of it's
range. You thought about all of the rumors you had heard on the ship before it sank and wondered where in the world you are. You began to rationalize that the ship probably radioed a distress signal to someone and,
perhaps, a ship will arrive soon to rescue you. You settled down into the bottom of the raft, trying to get as comfortable as possible with a suitcase and duffel bag strapped to you. You thought about the events that
had just occurred and how your life had abruptly changed! You thought about everything and you were surprised to realize that you missed school and your friends. Thinking about school, you drifted off to sleep. When you
woke up, it was almost dawn and, from the looks of the sky, it was going to be a beautiful day. You looked around the horizon, half expecting to see a rescue ship. Your heart sunk (like the cruise ship) when the
horizon was clear of ships. The cruise ship was nowhere in sight! Frantically, you searched for any sign of it, but there was none, not even floating debris. You wondered if everything sunk or if you drifted a great
distance from the ship. Thankfully, the ocean was calm; You think about steering the raft, but you have no idea where to go! You decide to visualize the cruise route in your mind.
Assignment: Using the Internet, calculate how far away from the sinkinng ship you needed to paddle to be safe from being sucked down with it. Write your answer on a sheet of paper. After finding the safe distance, calculate how long or how much paddling you would have to do. Add that answer to your paper and hand it in to the teacher.
